When your heater turns off suddenly and unexpectedly while it’s cold outside, it’s easy to panic.
However, there are a few things you can do to try and get your heater running again if you have no heat at home.
If these don’t work, you can always give us a call at Cottam Heating & Air Conditioning and we will come help you get your heater in Westchester, NY working again fast!
Do You Need Immediate Help?
If you smell rotten eggs or you have a carbon monoxide detector that is going off, turn off your heater and evacuate your house. Then, call our team. If you need to call emergency services, we’ll instruct you to do so at that time. These leaks can be dangerous and even deadly, so it’s important to get out of the house as soon as possible if one is occurring.
Check the Power and the Pilot Light
Many furnaces and some boilers have a power switch that controls electricity to the unit. This is usually in the utility area, near the heater itself. Make sure this hasn’t accidentally gotten switched off.
Similarly, check the pilot light. If it has gone out and you know how to relight it, do that now. If you don’t know how to relight it, call for help rather than messing with natural gas yourself.
Flip the Circuit Breaker
If the breaker to your furnace or boiler has flipped off, flip it back on. If it’s not off, consider flipping it off, then on again. Sometimes this will help your heater reset so it will turn on again once the power is restored. If the breaker keeps flipping off, leave it that way and call for professional help with your heater.
Try the Thermostat
Make sure the problem is with the heater and not with the thermostat. Try turning the thermostat way up and see if it makes the heater go on. Similarly, make sure that it is set to “heat” so that it is sending signals to the heater. If the heater isn’t responding to the thermostat, replace it yourself or call for help to get it replaced soon.
